They come for the famous Edinburgh Festival which includes Art, Music, Theatre, Comedy, Literature and Storytelling, as well as the wonderful Military Tattoo held every night at Edinburgh Castle. Leaning precariously out of my kitchen window around 10.30pm each night I catch a glimpse of the fireworks marking the closing of the evening’s festivities at the Tattoo – I never tire of it as it reminds me not to be complacent about the great city I live in.
From the diverse architecture across the Georgian New Town, Gothic Old Town, the West End and the old Port of Leith, to the growing wealth of fine restaurants, lively bars and traditional attractions, Edinburgh increasingly has something for everyone and fails to lose its charm. A walk to the shops on George Street this afternoon and I was overwhelmed by a real buzz about town. Street performers outside the Scottish National Gallery at the foot of the Mound command significant crowds, and in the background I hear the bagpipes, laughter and cheers, whilst up on George Street visitors relax and take in the atmosphere over a bite to eat in some of the many pop-up street cafes and bars. St Andrews Square at the east end of George Street is brought to life with market stalls, performance venues, eateries and the greatly positioned Aperol Spritz Garden Bar directly under the Melville Monument.
Some visitors will be here for just a short visit, a long weekend perhaps, whilst others will hopefully spend a wee bit longer and travel beyond Edinburgh to explore other parts of Scotland. Whatever is on the itinerary, and however long you may have, Edinburgh has cultural festivals and a great buzz all year round so it’s certainly somewhere to escape to time and time again!
