Exploring Shetland
Empty beaches, rugged coastline, fresh air, stunning scenery, island culture… does this sound like your perfect adventure?
The Shetland Islands are made up of over 100 islands sitting between Norway and Scotland. Just 400 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and as far north as St Petersburg, Russia, or Anchorage, Alaska, this set of Scottish Islands are like no other. Just over 500 years ago, Shetland was given to Scotland as a dowry from the King of Norway and the Norse heritage and culture is still very much part of life for Shetlanders. With their own flag, dialect, traditions and culture Shetland is a world of its own.
Experience the islands with one of the locals ‘Shetland Islands with Leah’.
Leah will host this unique experience immersing you into her home with a schedule of bespoke entertainment and activities that will allow you to experience Shetland in an exclusive and exciting way. What will my week look like?
Your experience begins in the island capital of Lerwick on the Monday morning where you’ll meet your host, driver and other guests. You may wish to arrive the evening before, but we are also offering the option to travel on the overnight ferry from Aberdeen. We can share more information about both of these options with you when planning the detail of your escape to Shetland.
Over the week you’ll be able to explore parts of the South Mainland including the beautiful beaches at St Ninian’s Isle and down at Sumburgh Head. You’ll also travel across the North Mainland where highlights include trails around Eshaness, Hillswick and a unique hands on rural experience near North Roe. We are excited for you to head out onto the water to explore one of the local nature reserves in the area – home to vast arrays of nesting seabirds in the soaring cliffs above the sea. Leah will take you for a visit to one or two of the larger inhabited islands off the mainland too to explore the unique culture of islanders in these parts. With visits to local heritage centres, as well as private experiences with local musicians, crafts people and artists, not to mention sampling the wonderful local produce from both land and sea, your week is sure to offer variety and insight to life here in Shetland.
You can enjoy two comfortable accommodations for the week which gives you the opportunity to relax and not live out of a suitcase each day.
On your final morning you will check-out from your hotel and travel south to Lerwick with your host and group. There will be a couple of interesting and scenic stops enroute before you bid farewell to your fellow travellers and your experience comes to an end at lunchtime. Onward travel to the airport at Sumburgh is available this afternoon, or those wishing to take the return ferry from Lerwick to Aberdeen in the evening can enjoy an afternoon at leisure here in Lerwick.
